Second defendant in Watson death case sentenced to jail
The driver of the van involved in the August 2005 traffic accident that resulted in the death of Jody Watson on Brotherhood Bridge was sentenced today. (Wednesday).

David Alex, like Stephanie Smathers, who was sentenced Tuesday, copped a plea in the case.

She was a passenger in a van operated by Alex.

Smathers and Alex were fighting when Alex lost control of the van and collided with Watson's car.

Assistant District Attorney Jack Schmidt says Alex received three years in jail, a $10,000 fine, probation for ten years, and ordered to pay restitution costs to the victim.

During Tuesday's deliberations, Juneau Superior Court Judge Patricia Collins also ordered Smathers to serve three years in prison.

Smathers was also convicted of felony theft last January.

The judge sentenced Samthers to six years, but suspended three years of the combined sentence and ordered her to serve ten years probation after she's release from prison.
